So I found myself in front of a lecture theatre full of new students yesterday. I had no pointy clicky thing. I didn’t really know how the lectern insanity worked. I had two colleagues with me, but I’d been in the job the longest (not quite 5 months now). And it was 30 minutes before I was due to start telling 200 new students how to navigate our resources.
So I went to YouTube.
I played Library Girl. Then I entertained them with Librarians do Gaga, even though it’s embarassing. I figured I could blend in social media with connectivity and the need for collaboration in your university life, so I introduced Old Spice Guy giving a shout out to librarians. I did my usual joke. “I am pretty! I love peanut butter!” Thankfully, they laughed.
As they’d enjoyed Isaiah Mustafa in a short clip, so I showed them the original. Of course, the crowd went wild. I then showed them Library Spice – sorry, new spice. They loved it.
They laughed, they cried, they threw roses.
Well, not quite, but they paid attention. And engaged. And clapped at the end of my 1.5 hour presentation when I tried really hard to avoid any use of the word “Boolean” *shudder*
So now I have a bunch of them. And I want MOAR! I wish Andrew Finegan had his Rihanna cover on YouTube. And I really really REALLY want to make a Single Ladies cover when I’m skinny. Who’s with me?
Hey Naomi,
Stumbled across ur post via Twitter. I think a cover of Single Ladies sounds like fun, I would love to show the Library old spice video in my O week Library lecture…just not so sure about where he drops the f bomb…*sigh* pretty sure someone would complain.
Keep blogging, I am enjoying reading 🙂
Thanks very much 🙂
Not sure when you’re talking about dropping the f-bomb… It’s not in Old Spice’s reply to @wawoodworth or library spice or even the original. So which one do you mean? Thanks
Oh I misheard bucket loads of library databases for the f bomb, woo hoo, I can use it!
